I laughed so hard at this article Darcy tweeted about that my coffee came out of my nose.

If you haven't read it yet, do. But I warn ya, don't have anything to drink or eat when you start it. It's a hoot!

That article led me to this one of Babble's Top 50 Mommy Bloggers (don't leave me yet!). I thoroughly enjoyed taking a trip through many of them. Some were my speed and I loved. Many were totally not my speed and I moved on.

The thing I loved the most? Having a listing of blogs to discover. I didn't have to go in search of any of them. They were all listed right there. All I had to do was click.

It really reinforced to me the idea of having a great community, tribe, whatever you want to call it of where I could do the same for the homeschool/ education community.

Then, I got really tickled since The Homeschool Community was ranked as one of the top 20 most active communities within 24 hours on the Blog Frog.

I guess other folks are looking for that tribe, too.

We Need a Groomer

My poor dog, Tinkerbell, needs a groomer. One much more skilled than I am at wrestling a three pound pooch while said pooch is washed, dried, brushed, and has her hair coiffed!

I barely am able to do my own, much less Tinkerbell's.

But, I tried. And now... she is now embarrassed and sporting a Snuggie.

Do you have pets? Little Buddy told me that he thought Tinkerbell just might not be my friend anymore. I fed her and she forgave me. Aren't dogs wonderful?

The Homeschool Community on The Blog Frog

I am always looking for new information for our homeschool and for me, the Mama. While there are a good many homeschool bloggers online and on Twitter, I was not able to find one location online where all of the homeschool bloggers united. Where we could share our posts, our tweets, and our ideas. Where we could become an community.

Then, I finally discovered The Blog Frog. Many of you have already heard of it. You are already participating in other communities. If not, it is a wonderful place to find your tribe - whether homeschooling, homemaking, or whatever - it's there.

So, head on over and take a look at The Homeschool Community. It's brand new and needs you.

Once you join the community, your blog posts will show within the community, you can participate in and initiate discussions in the forum, and your tweets will display. All within our homeschool community.

Well, I am switching my Twitter account over from @robyntweettweet to @RobynOHSH.

Why? Well, a few reasons.


1. I like to chat. Primarily, my tweets were somehow being blocked from Twitter search. The reason, who knows. But I love to participate in chats. (like #gno, #gtchat, #savvybloggin, etc.) Since I did not show up in the Twitter search, folks couldn't see my great comments. It was like I was tweeting in the wind. Frustrating for sure.

2. Bring it home baby. I originally set up @robyntweettweet before I even began blogging. I was oh so private with my tweets, etc. Then, along came my blog and Darcy. {I love Darcy!} She asked if I had a Twitter account she could linky linky on my blog. Who knew you could do such magic?

Well, Darcy does.

But besides Darcy?

Not me.

Anyway, now my Twitter account was opened up, I made 600 something pals on Twitter, but @robyntweettweet is hard to type. It's long. It's cumbersome. It doesn't have anything to do with my blog. So, I decided to bring it on home.

@RobynOHSH sure seemed better.

3. Cause I wanted a headache. Yep, it's definitely going to be a headache and hassle trying to get all my 600 something pals to now follow me on @RobynOHSH.

I sure hope my besties don't forget about me and there I sit all alone.

Guess who was the first to follow the NEW me? I'll give ya two guesses - You got it on one ---- DARCY. She even beat my Mom. (Oh, my Mom's not on Twitter.)

Freezer Cooking: Good Stuff

Don't ya just lurve to be able to put together a wonderful meal with items from your freezer? I have to admit, it's a bit of a recent discovery for me. Previously, when I worked all the time, I'd buy groceries, throw some items in the freezer and then forget about them being there. I never took the time to prepare a meal and put in the freezer.

Now, I heavily depend on my freezer to prepare meals for my family. On busy days, I appreciate being able to pull an item from our freezer, cook it, and have a warm, hot meal for my family.

Hear are some items I have planned for February.

 - Lasagna (twice is nice)
 - Chicken Pot Pie (three times is great)
 - Mama's Chicken Stuff (Um, I'll give ya the recipe soon)
 - Homemade Waffles (better than store bought)
 - Yogurt (homemade to boot!)

I am so glad Crystal is having this wonderful Freezer Cooking Days in February. Check out all of the other wonderful items for some freezer goodness. I know I am. =)

Fun Language Lessons: Mad Libs

I have to sneak! Yep, I have to sneak language lessons in sometimes. Some days I have to sneak more than others. And these are the days that I pull out Mad Libs.

Remember those? I do. I used to only be able to find them during our book fair at school. Now, they are more readily available at book stores, Cracker Barrel, etc.

But, I have to let you know about a new to us little ditty. Mad Libs for your iPhone or iTouch. Now we're talking the ultimate sneaking!!! Little Buddy gets his "electronics" adventure while reinforcing a fun language lesson. How cool is that?

High-Heeled Shoes

High heeled shoes were my little piece of luxury. I'd save up and buy them in a 10cm and even higher. I think I can blame my obsession with these shoes on Carrie from Sex and the City when it was it's hay-day. {Speaking of which, I can't wait for the movie this summer!}

As I was cleaning out my closet this past week, I wondered what I should do with these high-heeled shoes of mine. It's not like I can wear them as Little Buddy and I "do" school. I'd look pretty foolish checking on farm animals wrapped up in my Snuggie in them. Even though they are absolutely GORGEOUS. Even the animals would surely know this. They are smart animals you know.

But you know what? I could start a trend!

I wonder what the girls at the co-op will say. Hmm, I'll let ya know. Cause I sure do love my high-heels. {At least until they start hurting my feet.}

OH - And no, you will not find the pair above in my closet. I think my baby toe would stick out the side.

Little Buddy's Top 10 Things to Do with Me

I recently read an article about the top 10 things that children want to do each day with their parents. I thought about that article a good bit as we went through our daily activities. That night, I asked Little Buddy if he could name his favorite things for us to do together. Here they are:

1. Do our bedtime routine. This involves reading a story while he's in the bathtub, feed fish, read another book, say prayers, sing ALL of six of our nighttime songs, and scratch his back. He thinks it's for him. It's really as much for me.

2. Play outside together. Even when it rains.

3. Make cookies together. We need to back off this cookie making a little bit. Maybe I'll convince him we can make another, healthier treat together.

4. Snuggle. I love this one too, Buddy.

5. Tell me about when you were little. He loves these tales, boring as they can be. I always try to relate one to something going on with us.

6. Go shopping. Little Buddy knows me too well. He knows I love a good shopping trip - whether to Wal-Mart, the mall, or online.

7. Play games. I've posted a lot about our game playing, Ticket to Ride, Game Night Lessons, Keep em Reading this Summer, and RV Games to name a few. That reminds me of all the ones I haven't written about yet. =)

8. Watch movies. 

9. Be silly. Now, this is a great stress reliever when the day has gone long.

10. Read our Bible stories. My Mom gave us our Bible Story books from when I was a little girl. We've loved reading them together.

Our First Pinewood Derby, Jeff Gordon, and Funny Parents

Have you ever wondered what in the world all the hub bub about a pinewood derby was about? Have you ever even heard of a pinewood derby?

Well, I was in the group that had never heard of it. Growing up, being a girl with only a sister, I had no need to know about such things. Boy Scouts was so far from my concern, I really could have cared less what they raced, flew, or lit. I was into how many cookies we sold in Brownies and the socks that went with my uniform. Loved those socks. I wonder if my Mom kept them. Oh, and that beanie. So cute. Of course I wanted it to come in red and not that brown color.

Boy, have things changed around here. Little Buddy is in his first year of Scouts. He's a Wolf Cub. We've been gearing up for this Pinewood Derby for months. Now, by gearing up I mean "thinking" about it and "talking" about it. Not really doing much more than that. Well, we have been researching websites for Derby car designs. Whewee - there are some cool ones out there.

Since my husband is, well, a man, I "let" him have the pleasure of working with Little Buddy on the design etc. My husband really gets into the design thing. He has two degrees in Architecture and doesn't get to use them everyday. So, whenever there is a design opportunity, it's his.

Little Buddy is a huge Jeff Gordon fan. Driver jacket and all! (Actually, that's why I am not going to go to Blissdom this year. We are headed to the Daytona 500. ) So, guess what his car was designed to look like?

You got it, Jeff Gordon's car. Well, sorta.

Aren't those custom vinyl decals SWEET? Excuse my high-quality photo. I made it with my phone after the race. Look in the bottom left corner, see my little love, Tinkerbell. She wanted to be in the picture, too! Such a vain dog.

My husband had to be out of town on business on Derby day. So I got to sign Little Buddy in, film, and socialize with the other parents (love that socializing part). My Mom went with us to cheer Little Buddy on. (She's a great Nana that way!)

The parent's were cracking me up. I think it was just as much the parents racing as the children (or so they thought). I'm sure they were saying the same about me. I am pretty competitive about stuff like that. I know I shouldn't be, but hey - I'm human.

Race results: Little Buddy came in FIRST PLACE for his den and SECOND PLACE in his pack!!! Woo Hoo!!! It was hard not to do a big ole touchdown style dance. I restrained myself.

But I was doing the dance on the inside! I think I still may be doing it.

Haiti Earthquake Lesson Plan

We have all watched the images on the news in absolute horror and sadness. Trying to make some kind of sense of it all.

Imagine now what our children are thinking and wondering? That was my concern. What was Little Buddy thinking about this horrible, tragic situation. How could I help him? This led to creating my Haiti Earthquake Lesson Plan.

Objectives

 - Learn about Haiti

 - Learn about earthquakes

 - Learn about impact of earthquakes on Haiti

Haiti

1. Locate Haiti on the online map and then on our globe. Remark on areas surrounding Haiti and its proximity to our home.

2. Haiti is a country of nearly 8.3 million people in approximately 10,271 square miles (about the population of North Carolina within the land size of Massachusetts or Hawaii).

3. Haiti has a history of unrest and disorganized goverment leading it to be the poorest country in North America. Read about the history of Haiti and its culture.

Earthquakes

1. Study earthquakes, how they impact the world, and disaster preparedness.

Impact on Haiti

1. View pictures of the physical impact to buildings and structures from earthquake. (Bing Haiti Earthquake App)

2. Discuss the impacts on people and their culture.

3. Discuss what people are doing to help, what our family has done to help and what more can we do.

Is It Disrespectful?

At a recent Mom's Night for our co-op, the following situation was discussed:

A co-op teacher (from another co-op  - of course) told her class of 12 year olds that she would e-mail their next assignment to them as soon as she got home. One of the students raised his hand and stated to the teacher that her last e-mail had 8:15 PM on it. The teacher was insulted and wrote the child up for being disrespectful.

Our discussion was pretty interesting, as I'm sure you can imagine.

Was the child really disrespectful? Did the teacher overreact? What should the parents have done? I'd love to hear what you think.

How We Recycle

Ever wonder how another family really reduces, reuses or recycles? Well, just ask the children. They'll sure tell ya. Or at least Little Buddy will.

At Scouts, he shared that his Daddy reuses the orange juice container for Sangria after he makes it. 

Ok, that's really not the kind of sharing we wanted to hear about, but it was pretty funny. And embarrassing. Especially since his Daddy only makes Sangria about two times a year.

But it reminded me of Karin's post about Drinking Like a Pioneer Woman. And it also reminded me of my previous post about Funny Things Children Say.

So.... how does your family reduce, reuse and recycle? Just ask your children for the real answer? What embarrassing things have your children *shared* lately?

My Little Entreprenuer

Those of you who know me know I love my businesses and marketing most definitely. You also know I am passionate about Little Buddy. Like most parents, my goal is to raise him in a loving, Christian home, and to provide him a solid foundation for him to build his life upon when he grows up.

Yes, test scores, SAT/ACT exams, and college acceptances are very important to me. These serve as a reward for his education and the investment that he and I both make in it. But more importantly, I want for him to have the knowledge of HOW to study, HOW to learn, HOW to reason, HOW to be a decent person, HOW to be a good husband and father, and yes HOW to make something of himself and be able to provide well for his family.

When Little Buddy told me last week that he thought it was time to start his own business, I was blown away. I listened to his business idea, asked him questions, and gave a couple of suggestions. We discussed how to get his business started and how the operations of the business would work. Most importantly, we talked about the time required to manage a business and how it could not impact his school time.

He still was determined.

So, we discussed it with his father, who was just as supportive. We worked together as a family over the weekend to help Little Buddy bring his dream of a business to a reality. We agreed we would start small and then go from there.

I have to admit, I am a bit exhausted from all of the work in getting it started with him. Yes, he really helped a great deal. He has an eye for detail and was very specific in what he wanted. For an eight year old, he's got it together. I couldn't be more proud.

Fiddle Dee Dee

Ever wonder why men's buttons are on the left of the placket and women's are on the right? Well, here is what we learned from the Science channel.

Men's buttons are on the left to enable them to unbutton their coat with their left hand while drawing their sword with their right.

Women's buttons are on the right so their right handed maids could dress them more easily.

Well, Fiddle Dee Dee! Been a long time since any maid dressing and sword drawing 'round here. How about you?

Martin Luther King, Jr. Study

One of the goals of our homeschool is for Little Buddy to learn about the world we live in, our history, and how we can make the world better than we found it.

Today we celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr's birthday. Growing up, I knew a little bit about Martin Luther King, Jr. What I really remembered was our being out of school. I want more for Little Buddy. I want him to understand this man's dream. I want him to know about the world before MLK and be able to see the difference he made in the world. What's more, I want him to believe in his heart that one person working hard can make a difference.

Together, we watched MLK's "I Have a Dream" speech from August 1963. We discussed the timeframe of the world, Abraham Lincoln's work to free the slaves and the continued repressions bringing about MLK's work. We had a long talk about how we treat people and how we think of others.



For today and our school, I didn't want to just have a day off of school or color pictures to celebrate MLK's life. I had a dream of a better day.

Olympics Unit Study

The 2010 Winter Olympics take place in Vancouver, Canada February 12 - 28th. I remember growing up and being mesmerized by gracefulness of the figure skating. Remember Torvill and Dean at the Sarajevo Olympics? If for some reason you don't remember (and please don't make me feel any older than I am by saying you were too young! I, too, am just a baby.), just take a look.



I also remember being bored to absolute TEARS when any other sport was on and how LONG its seemed it lasted.

So, the point of this post?

Well, I'm gearing up for next month's Olympics to make it a fun, educational, memorable experience for Little Buddy in our homeschool. We are having an Olympics Unit Study. Sure, I'll share.

Great Graphics Software for Children

For a while, Little Buddy has been asking me for Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop for his laptop. Since he is eight and I barely know how to use these myself, we have politely declined his request.

Finally, thanks to Amy Bayliss, we discovered getpaint.net. This free design software is definitely not at the Photoshop or Illustrator level, but it is perfect for Little Buddy. I certainly am proud of him for wanting to learn more about design software and encourage his enthusiasm for learning new things.

I wish I had started learning this stuff at his age. Maybe I'd know how to make a blog button by now if I had.

Wiped Out I Tell Ya!

Heart of the Matter Online - Just What I Need

As a homeschooler, I love to find fun ways to teach material and reinforce our lessons. There are days where this is more of a struggle than others.

There is a resource many homeschoolers utilize on a daily basis to find great ideas for their own homeschooling - Heart of the Matter Online. The crew at HOTM keep things interesting, fresh, fun, and focused.

I don't know about you, but that is exactly what I need when I am searching for homeschool ideas.

HOTM not only provides me with fun learning ideas and activities, the supportive articles keep me grounded in our family's decision to homeschool and pointed in the right direction.

A Ticket to Geography and Math

This past Christmas, Little Buddy received the game Ticket to Ride by Days of Wonder. I had heard of this game, but had definitely not seen it in my local Target store. His game was purchased through Amazon, you know, the store with everything that you can get your purchases lickety split. Especially if you are a Prime member - you are already a Prime member aren't you? (It saves me a ton in shipping for all of my office supplies and homeschool supplies, I love it!)

I digress...

Since Little Buddy has always been fond of trains and we love to travel, the game seemed a perfect game for him. The age suggestion is 8 and up. Yippee. Perfect age.

We played the game for family game night and had so much fun! We all did. Sometimes I get a bit worn out with the same ole childish board games, but this game was fun. A challenge I enjoy. Little Buddy quickly began applying his geography skills and math was reinforced throughout the scoring process. There is an interactive website so you can check it out for yourself. Let me know what you think - or what your children think.

As a homeschooling Mama, I love it when a fun game gives a little more.

January: Eye Care Month

January has quiet a few important things associated with it - New Year's resolutions begin, my birthday, Martin Luther King, Jr's birthday, my sister-in-law's birthday, my nephew's birthday, and my birthday. (Oh, did I mention my birthday?) While these are certainly important, another important part of January is it's designation as Eye Care Month.

Proper eye care is especially near and dear to my heart because of Little Buddy's vision disorder. I've written about it previously and you are most welcome to read about it here. I whole heartedly recommend you schedule an eye care appointment for your children as soon as possible. I also recommend when you select your child's eye care professional, first research to determine if he or she has any experience working with pediatric eye disorders. Had our eye care team not had this training, Little Buddy's ability to read and therefore his life would be dramatically different.

As for incorporating Eye Care Month into our homeschool learning. We most certainly are doing that as well. We are paying a visit to our special eye care team and taking them cookies, we are studying the parts of the eye, we are discussing how Little Buddy's eyes work a bit differently than mine, and we are learning how to properly care for our eyes. We are also using parts of the National Eye Institutes lesson plan for 4th through 8th graders. I am also using parts from Teachervision's lesson plans and printables.

Oh, and did I mention that my birthday is in January?

My Snuggie Found a Purpose

Moms know that infomercials and children are like peanut butter and jelly. What children hear in those infomercials sticks together in their minds. My Little Buddy is no different. Put an infomercial on television and he'll tell you all the reasons we really need a Sham-Wow (got em), Pancake Puffs (yep, that too), and Benderoos and Blendypens (couple of sets).

Last Christmas, in the height of the Snuggie craze, Little Buddy included these lovely accessories on his Christmas list. His list had one thoughtful twist - he wanted one for everyone in his family! Oh me. How lovely we all looked Christmas when we unwrapped these confections of the design world. I'm more of a Little Giraffe blanket sorta girl myself.

Well, this week as we suited up (lots of layers, my dear) to check on our farm animals. I knew we would need a blanket for our ride to the barns.

AH HA! Snuggies to the rescue! Boy, they are pretty warm. I hate to admit it.

Um, but, they aren't very attractive. Luckily, the animals were still happy to see us. Matching Snuggies and all!

Florida Cold Snap! Oh My!

My friend, Karin's, blog post says it all - really it does! Please read it here. You will absolutely roll laughing. But, oh my! She's so right!

We planned our trip to Disney in January for multiple reasons. I had a major conference for my business in Orlando, my birthday is in January, Santa brought our family annual passes, and it is usually above 50 degrees there and below 50 degrees here. And to be completely honest - we just love Disney.

A New Year's trip to get the year started right.

Um, but I didn't know Florida was scheduled to have a cold snap!

Guess what I had forgotten to pack: hats, gloves, heavy coats, scarves, ear muffs, thick socks. Guess what I DID pack: short sleeved shirts, light jackets, and flip flops. Within the first two hours, I was wishing for some Disney magic to make my cashmere sweaters and new Burberry muffler I had gotten for Christmas to appear in a poof. Believe me, I blinked hard hoping they would be there if I kept trying. Nope, nothing.

We, along with all of the other Disney'ers trying to escape the frigid air from wherever they traveled from, flocked to the stores of Main Street and scooped up all the lovely hats, scarves and gloves we could find. By SpectroMagic time, Main Street USA looked more like a ski resort main street.

By the end of SpectroMagic, we were wishing the stores also sold some thermal underwear.

Disney Announces Homeschool Days

Disney says January is Disney Homeschool Month!

Disney has announced January 24th through 26th as Disney Homeschool Days for 2010. Space is limited for the program "Engineering the Magic" to be held on the 24th and 25th and I recommend signing up as soon as possible to attend.

It appears there are limited programs for 2nd grade and younger, so I would hop to it for registering if your children are 2nd grade or below. Disney has done a great job in making sure all school-age groups are covered each day and that subjects are varied and interesting. I would have expected no less of Disney!
