A co-op teacher (from another co-op - of course) told her class of 12 year olds that she would e-mail their next assignment to them as soon as she got home. One of the students raised his hand and stated to the teacher that her last e-mail had 8:15 PM on it. The teacher was insulted and wrote the child up for being disrespectful.Our discussion was pretty interesting, as I'm sure you can imagine.
Was the child really disrespectful? Did the teacher overreact? What should the parents have done? I'd love to hear what you think.
The student's comment wasn't really relevant to what she said. What was his tone of voice?
ReplyDeleteI don't see that statement as being disrespectful. Maybe there were othe issues going on with the teacher?
I probably would have just let it roll of my back.
Thanks Kela - I've not heard what his tone of voice was, but knowing this child - I couldn't imagine it being anything but sweet.
ReplyDeleteI was a bit shocked by the whole issue and discussion. I didn't see it as disrespectful at all. I saw it more as him wondering about what time to expect it.
I guess tone of voice would make a difference but judging from the words alone I have a hard time seeing the comment as disrespectful.
ReplyDeleteObviously this teacher isn't very organized and got upset because the student pointed that out. In my opinion homework assignments should be given to the children at the end of the class. The only thing I email or post later is video clips of something I've shown or website links for extra exploration. Everything my students need is given to them in advance.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds to me like the student was pointing out that the last assignment was emailed at 8:15PM.
Now the student could have been mad about that or just stating a fact. The bottom line is that I think the teacher had her own issues that had/has nothing to do with the student.
